Way to go, Apple!
We knew iPods were a hot seller this past Holiday season, but I've been amazed at how many friends and colleagues have been buying iPods, Mini's, and Shuffles since the holidays. Maybe they'll wind up buying a new dual-processor G5 (see previous post).

Thanks a lot, Apple
I finally helped bring a long time colleague over from the Dark Side to Apple and OS X. He used to be a Mac user in the bad old days, but then switched to Windows out of disgust. He ordered a new dual processor G5 and studio display and added memory and a hard disk. After one week of unreliable behavior Apple tech support told him it was a DOA (dead on arrival). Now, they're sending him a new one of course, but I can't help but feel that the Mother Ship has let me down.

Analyst: Apple Interested in Buying TiVo
Analyst: Apple Interested in Buying TiVo:
Apple is interested in buying digital video recorder (DVR) pioneer and market leader TiVo, according to a Wall Street analyst. "What we hear on the street is that Apple is interested in their business and that they are a takeout target," analyst Steven Kroll Jr. of Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co. told Reuters.
Apple would have been much better off buying Sonicblue, the maker of ReplayTV (currently owned by Marantz) when they were being shopped around several years ago.

US-CERT Cyber Security Tip ST05-002 -- Keeping Children Safe Online
Keeping Children Safe Online:
"When a child is using your computer, normal safeguards and security practices may not be sufficient. Children present additional challenges because of their natural characteristics: innocence, curiosity, desire for independence, and fear of punishment. You need to consider these characteristics when determining how to protect your data and the child."

Enduring Freedom Killed In Action Fund
I want to call your attention to the Enduring Freedom Killed In Action Fund, established to support families in which a parent has been killed in Afghanistan or Iraq. I found out about it through direct mail, but what caught my attention was an endorsement from retired General Tommy Franks. From their site:
"In the pursuit of liberating these victims of oppression in Afghanistan and Iraq, the ultimate sacrifice is being made by hundreds of America's finest young military personnel. Many leave behind a spouse and small children. Unable to afford the life insurance that was offered to them, they must now survive on the insufficient standard military death benefit of $12,000. It is the goal of the Enduring Freedom KIA Fund to give financial aid to those needy and deserving families."
